Physics - the branch of science, which deals with matter and energy - the science of accurate measurements, the experimental investigations and results which are of enormous importance to the daily life of man. Tremendous efforts of many of the finest human brains developed today's physics. The twentieth century witnessed the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, fission and fusion bombs, transistors, IC's, computers, lasers, opto-electronics and their countless applications

1957

The inception of Sri Avinashilingam Home Science College for Women.

1957

The emergence of the department of physics with Pre University Physics and Ancillary Physics.

1978

Introduction of Physics major in the triple major pattern, when institution is conferred with autonomous status.

1984

Resumption of single major with two ancillaries. Community link programmes are introduced.

1988

The faculty, infrastructure and quality of education paved the way for the emergence of Deemed university.

1989

Introduction of Double major and physics is being offered in Combination with Mathematics, Chemistry and Special Education. The syllabus is restructured and revised from time to time so as to cater the needs of their present society.

2001

In the view of the rising demand for energy, which our nation faces now advanced study on alternate sources of energy is the need of the hour. With the existing   background of Physics and Solar energy research, Physics Department introduced a postgraduate course in Energy  Science.

2003

Introduction of M.Phil and PhD programmes in Physics.

Introduction of an Add-on course-Certificate course in Electronics
