The candidates will be selected for admission to the -Research Programme based on their academic performance and by means of a personal interview.

The candidates selected for admission to the M.Phill / Ph.D. Programmes in the University Departments shall be required to submit their original Transfer Certificate / Conduct Certificate (issued by the Institution in which last studied), Statement of Marks and Provisional / Degree Certificates of PG and M,Phil. Degree Courses.

The certificate once surrendered will not be returned to the candidates till the completion of the research programme. Hence, the candidate are advised to retain with them a maximum number of attested Xerox copies of the certificates. No correspondence will be entertained on such request.

1. Eligibility for admission to the M.Phil. Degree Course

Candidates for admission to the M.Phil. Degree Course in any subject shall be required to have passed the Master's Degree with not less than 55 percent marks or B + Grade in the same or related subjects of this institution, or those of any other University/Institute recognised by the Syndicate of this Institute as equivalent thereto. The related subject will be approved by the Syndicate on the recommendation of the Deans concerned. For M.Phil. in Education the candidates should have secured 55% marks both in Post Graduate and M.Ed. Examinations.

FULL TIME

2. Duration

The Duration of the M.Phil. Degree Course shall be two semesters starting normally from August 1st in a calendar year. Each semester shall have not less than 100 working days exclusive of the examination days.

3. Course of Study

The course of study for the M.Phil. Degree shall consist of four written papers as Part-I (given below) and Dissertation as Part-II of the programme.

The Duration of Examination and the maximum marks for each written paper shall be 3 hours and 100 marks respectively.

a. Written papers under Part-1

Paper I

Research Methodology - Common to candidates belonging to one or more departments.

Paper II

Advanced paper in the discipline - Common to all the candidates in a particular discipline.

Paper III

Special Paper - pertaining to the area of specialization chosen by the candidate under the guide.

Paper IV

Women's Studies (Common to all the candidates)

Those who fail in one or more written papers may reappear for that or those papers in a subsequent examination.

No candidate shall be permitted to reappear for the written papers more than once.

b. Dissertation under Part-II

Each candidate shall be required to choose a research problem under a Supervisor-Guide and submit the dissertation incorporating the results of her investigation carried out under her Supervisor - Guide.

4. Scheme of Examination

The assessment will consist of both internal and external components in the proportion of 60 : 40 in both written papers and dissertation.

a. Written papers:

The candidates shall be required to appear for the written examinations under Part-I of the programme at the end of six months, after registration. The written examination will normally be conducted in the month of February /March in a calendar year.

b. Dissertation:

The candidates shall be required to submit the Dissertation at the end of one year after registration. Extension of time for submission of M.Phil dissertation will be granted up to a maximum period of 12 months on payment of a penalty of Rs. 75/- per month for the first six months and Rs.125/- per Month for the next six months. Ordinarily the M.Phil. dissertation shall not exceed 120 pages including tables, illustrations, bibliography and appendices.

The maximum marks for the dissertation shall be 400.

The dissertation submitted by the candidate shall be valued by two examiners of whom one will be the Supervisor and the other, an outside expert in the field. The examiner shall evaluate the dissertation and send the report in the prescribed form in terms of marks. The dissertation will be "highly commended" if the marks are 75 per cent and above, "commended" if they are 50-74 per cent and "not commended" which means failed, if they are below 50 per cent.

No candidate shall be permitted to resubmit the dissertation more than once. All the requirements for the award of the M.Phil. Degree shall be completed within a period of two years from the date of registration.

5. Passing Minimum

The requirement for a candidate to be declared successful in the M.Phil. Degree examination shall be as follows.

  • A minimum of 50 per cent in each of the written papers and dissertation, in both internal and external assessments.

  • The candidate who does not satisfy the above condition shall be declared as 'failed' in the particular paper(s) or dissertation as the case may be.

  • A candidate shall be declared to have qualified for the M.Phil. Degree if she has passed all the written papers under Part-I and dissertation under Part-II. The results thus obtained shall also be classified.

6. Conferment of the Degree

No candidate shall be eligible for the conferment of the M.Phil. Degree unless she has undergone the prescribed course of study for a period of not less than one year in this Institute and has passed all examinations and fulfilled such conditions as have been prescribed therefore.

7. Qualification of the Guide

Qualification for the person to teach and guide M.Phil. Course shall be the Ph.D. degree in the subject concerned.

In case, where Ph.D. is not available in a particular subject, special permission may be obtained from the Vice Chancellor for permitting teachers with M.Phil. / M.Litt. Degree and 5 years teaching experience in Post Graduate Classes to teach and guide M.Phil. Course and this permission shall be granted on merit in each individual case.

M.PHIL. SUMMER SEQUENTIAL PROGRAMME

Eligibility

A teacher / working women employed and working in this Institute or in any other school/college / university / research and other Institutes or recognised office shall be eligible to register for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and undergo the prescribed course of study in the Institute provided she has passed the Master's Degree with not less than 55 per cent marks or B+ grade in the same or related subject of this Institute or that of any other University / Institute recognised by the Syndicate of this Institute as equivalent thereto. They must have at least two years of experience in Teaching/ Research Level.

Duration

The duration of the course shall be two years starting normally from April and comprising three months compulsory attendance during summer (fromApril 1 to June 30th) each year. The candidate shall appear for Part-I examination at the end of the first summer and submit the dissertation at the end of the second summer i.e. - 30th June.

An extension of time for submission of dissertation will be granted at the end of the second summer for a period of 12 months on payment of a penalty of Rs.75/- per month for the first six months and Rs.125/- per month for the next six months.

The regulations governing the full-time M.Phil course regarding the courses of study, passing minimum and qualifications of the guide conducting the M.Phil. Course shall apply also to the part-time course.

ALL THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF M.PHIL. DEGREE SHALL BE COMPLETED WITHIN A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS FROM THE DATE OF REGISTRATION

Revision of Regulations and Curriculum

The institute may, from time to time, revise, amend or change the regulations, scheme of examination and syllabi whenever found necessary and such amendments shall come into effect from the date prescribed.
