The changing socio-economic forces and the advancement in technology taking place in our society in recent years are giving rise to new trends in the family structure, role of men and women, value priorities, living styles and work patterns. The scientific aspects of effective resource management have added significance on account of the increasing value of time, limitation of resources and increasing number of responsibilities that have to be shouldered by women as homemakers and wage earners.

Background

The Department of Home Management established in 1960 had undergone amendment in nomenclature as Family Resource Management (1983-84) and Resource Management (2002-03).

Objectives

From its inception the department aims at training young women towards better managerial abilities with the following objectives to :

  • Provide knowledge in resource management and interior design for effective family living.

  • Introduce concepts on technological intervention to relieve drudgery and create safe environment.

  • Conduct need based research on emerging thrust areas related to resource management.

  • Mobilize action programmes towards enhancing the quality of living.

  • Inculcate among students the treasured values of Indian Culture.

Teaching and Learning

The departmental resources like well equipped labs, departmental library, computer, epidiascope, slide and over head projectors facilitate effective teaching, learning and research experience. A fully furnished Home Management Residence offers exposure to the students on applied home making. Beyond chalk and talk, the newer teaching technologies incorporate brain storming, brain tweezing, team teaching, micro teaching, think - tanks, demonstration, displays, use of CD and field trips and model preparation. Individual assignments, seminars and projects form integral part of assessment.  

Extension Activities

Extension activities are undertaken both in rural and urban areas under National Service Scheme (UG level) and Community and Social Services (PG students).

The department actively participates in out- reach programmes in conducting campaigns for Antiplastic, Anti-tobacco/alcohol, Anti-dowry, Safe environmental practices, AIDS awareness, Small savings drive and Voters’ awareness. The observance of all national days, conduct of medical camps and tree planting drive are worth mentioning. Creating awareness on solar cooking is another important work undertaken by the department.

Student profile

The students admitted to the varied courses hail from other states (Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Pondicherry, Orissa, Bihar, Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya and Uttar Pradesh) at the levels of Ph.D. (29%), M.Phil. (15%), M.Sc. (53%) and B.Sc. (10%). The success rate was 96% (UG), 98% (PG) and 100% (Diploma).

Future Plans  

The department has envisaged the following as future programmes: 

  • Set up an advanced laboratory for Water Management Study

  • Preparing lessons for e- learning

  • Initiate Consultancy for Interior Designing, Landscaping, Kitchen designs and Household Equipment maintenance

  • Conduct short courses for women on Flower Arrangement, Arts and Crafts and House Keeping

  • Planning for capsule, module and certificate courses for homemakers and students

  • Write Text Books, prepare monographs and audio-visual aids and adopt advanced and latest techniques in teaching methods

  • Collaborate with Industries/Universities for applied research

  • Start for Distance Education/Open School Programmes

  • Getting patent for solar cookers

  • Have collaborative research with Solar Cookers International, USA and other possible solar activists group that exist all over the globe
