The Department of Commerce since its inception in
1972 is offering commerce course at the
undergraduate level. From 1980 onwards, B.Com Degree
is offered under the double major system, with
commerce and business management . Taking into
considerations the latest developments in the
discipline, the felt needs of the students and their
employability, the course content is carefully
devised and updated every year. The department
arranges periodically guest lectures, and field
visits to strengthen the teaching of the subject and
to expose the students to the actual work
situations. The faculty members participate in the
refresher and training courses to update their
knowledge and teaching techniques. The department
has started the Post graduate course (self
financing) in the year 2000-01.B.com (Computer
Application) is introduced in the year 2007-08.
The nomenclature of M.Com - Finance Currently offered
is changed to M.Com From 2008-09,with four elective
subjects viz Accounting, Finance, Marketing and
Insurance
OBJECTIVES OF COMMERCE EDUCATION
To prepare students for executive and non-executive
positions.
- To promote entrepreneurial skills for
self-employment.
- To promote general education of business and
commerce.
- To train the students for professionalism,
specialization, creativity and innovation in
economic and business activities.
- To create awareness of the global economy and
training the players in the international business
area.
- To develop skills in teaching and research in
Commerce.
VOCATIONALISATION OF UG COURSE
In 1994, in line with the UGC's policy on
vocationalisation of undergraduate courses, the
department has introduced a three year vocational
course at the degree level titled 'Tax procedure and
Practice'. This course is offered as double majors
with Commerce and Tax Procedure and Practice. The
UGC offered syllabus was modified to make it more
functional and job- oriented and also to fit in
with the general curricular framework of the
University. This course offers a summer training
programme for a period of thirty days on completion
of the second and fourth semesters.
SPECIAL FEATURES
- Two On-the-job training for a duration of thirty
days each.
- Linkage with Tax practitioners / Industrial
establishments.
- Periodical guest lectures by experts in the field of
Taxation
- Coordination of activities by a monitoring
committee.
