Biochemistry is a branch of biological sciences, which has played a very important role in unraveling many a mysteries of life processes. Biotechnology has put this understanding into technological use, thus giving an altogether new dimension to the subject of Biochemistry.

Features of the Department

Teaching and Research are the major activities of the Department. Apart from these, the Department carries out many activities as follows:

1. Association of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

All the students of the Department are the members of the association of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The Secretary for the association is elected from the second year undergraduate programme. The activities are inaugurated in the month of July. The students organize lectures by inviting eminent scientists from India and abroad. They also organize seminars, symposia and quizzes. A member of the staff will be the chief advisor of the Association.

2. Society of Biological Chemists (India) - Coimbatore Branch

The department has taken up the responsibilities of the Coimbatore Branch of SBC (India). The activities include enrolling new student members and faculty members every year from all Educational Institutions in and around Coimbatore, renewal of memberships, organizing meetings at regular intervals. Members of the branch attend the Annual Meetings of the SBC.

Blood Donors Club of the University

The department is in charge of the University Blood Donors Club, which is sponsored by The Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society, Chennai. The club activities are carried out in association with the Blood bank of the Government Hospital, Coimbatore. Every year on October 1st, the Blood Donors Day, blood donation campaign is arranged when more than 300 units of blood will be collected. Competitions will be conducted on blood donation. The NSS volunteers of the department are also involved in the activity. Awareness of the importance of Blood Donation is created among the students of the university every now and then through quizzes, group discussions and skits. Dr. V. Bhuvaneswari and Ms. S. Gayathri Devi are in-charge of this activity.

4. Remedial coaching classes for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled tribe students

The underprivileged students are given special coaching after working hours- four days per week. They are given coaching in English and major subjects and are exposed to various avenues towards higher education and job opportunities.

5. Herbal garden

As an outreach extension activity, a herbal garden is maintained in the campus.

Objectives

  • To educate the students on the various concepts of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and allied fields.
  • To do research in various fields of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and to disseminate the findings to the community.
  • To equip students in taking up employment or start income-generating business by offering the vocational degree course.
  • To help students gain more knowledge through visits to research institutions, industries, hospitals, other Universities and the like, during on-the-job training and project work.
  • To give an opportunity to students to meet eminent scientists working in various fields of Biochemistry, by way of invited lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, study tours, conferences and other such activities.
  • To prepare the students for the national-level competitive examinations in Biochemistry and related subjects.
  • To bring out and nurture the talents hidden in students by encouraging them to participate in various competitions and seminars.
